One of the more common tactics for players using Terran units is the Banshee Rush. If you are going to invest in this tactic, you need to setup your economy pretty quick then rush to building a Starport and possibly a Cloak research then pumping out Banshees. Obviously, with this tactic, you are going to need a quite a lot of Minerals and Vespene gas but, if you can pull it off, you can successfully harass your enemy and ruin any chance of him or her ever recovering and winning the game.

Before we get into the details of doing a Banshee rush build, first consider the pros and cons of such a build. For pros, obviously, if you establish your banshee rush quickly enough, you can quickly setup your attack so that your enemy’s Mineral and Vespene gas harvesting is slowed down or even stopped. The Banshee’s wide range also gives it a bit of an advantage during an attack.

On the cons, if you do a banshee rush, you will not be able to setup a decent defense at your base. Therefore, walling successfully becomes doubly important. You can also expect a decent enemy to invest on a few probes to send your way. Make sure to decommission them ASAP or else, if they see you building to a Banshee rush, they can build a viable defense and overwhelm you with rushes using their cheaper units. You will also need a bit if micro skills in this build and make sure you’ve brushed up on your hit and run skills as well.

So, how do you build up to a Banshee rush. First, establish a good economy, focusing on saving up resources for building a Star Port. First, start with three SCV’s and send them as gatherers for minerals. Once you’ve got the three, the fourth one should go to building a refinery. While you are building a refinery, continue pumping out SCV’s. After you finish with your refinery, proceed to building a Barracks. Continue producing SCV’s and target having at least three SCV’s harvesting Vespene gas for you. After the Barracks, start building a supply depot succeeded by a Star Port.

Once you have your Starport, you can pump out your Banshees. Remember to use the initial buildings as walls for your ramps. Even though Banshees are potent attackers, you still need to build up some defense at your base. So, at first, produce a minimum of two Banshees. These two will serve as your early scouts/harassers. Consider training some Marines for base defense. You might also want an SCV on auto-repair mode for your Banshees that get hit. Once you have a stable economy and base production going, you can pump more Banshees out.
