Best Starcraft 2 Zerg vs Zerg Strategies Guide – Effective SC2 ZvZ Strategy & Counters
With the same strategies at hand and units and structures to be used, you can expect nothing less than a fiercely fought battle in a Zerg versus Zerg combat. In this Starcraft 2 guide, you will learn a few tricks to tip the odds of victory over to your side.
Speed and Brood Structures
Any long-time Zerg fan would know that speed is a prime factor in increasing Zerg forces’ chances of defeating opposing forces. This is just as important as the succession of units produced.
Having speed though doesn’t mean that you can exhaust all your available resources at once to create a very powerful swarm. No, that doesn’t do the trick. It means spending as much resource as needed on units that can deliver massive damage to your enemies. A classic strategy is to produce swarms of Zergling, a very effective but cost-efficient unit, to terrorize and take down the enemy’s colonies. With their low cost and high damage abilities, Zerglings can easily keep an enemy colony busy. They thrive in great numbers and a few upgrades so don’t scrimp on Zergling production and upgrading. These will prove to be a force to reckon with in any battleground, flooding the enemy colonies with a force that can tear down structures and units alike. Even Mutalisks, Hydralisks, and Ultralisks in your enemy’s base will find it impossible to repel a Zergling attack of immense magnitude.
The catch here is that your Zerg enemy is more than likely to create his own force of Zergling. If he’s not moving from his base, a constant barrage of Zergling attacks, preferably with a ratio of 5 up to 10 to 1, will give you the advantage. The best moves should be grounded on superior offensive attacks that will let lessen your enemy’s capabilities to outlast you.
If, on the other hand, the combat is close to your home, you’ll need to have your own massive force of Zerglings, about a hundred or more units, that is supported with Mutalisks and Hydralisks to fend off the same kind of attack from the enemy. Combine this with a choking tactic, a strategy that will suppress the Zerglings that are entering your camp, and you will be able to prevent the Zergling rush.
Scouting
Early reconnaissance often dictates the speed and manner by which you can cripple your enemy’s forces. With reconnaissance, you will see what your opponent is doing, what it’s preparing against you, and what you can do to counter its possible strategies. This can also help you to create your initial tactics, especially offensive attacks, as well. It may not be written in stone that the first player who attacks wins a Zerg vs. Zerg combat, but having the upper hand often does a great deal of damage on your opponent’s forces. Better keep the enemy busy with defending its camp than you deal with the same situation.
Reconnaissance with a reasonably powerful Overlord/Overseer may prove to be a very risky tactic at the beginning. This pays off really well though if you can execute the tactic right. Once your Overlord is within your enemy’s vicinity, you can begin with reconnaissance. Overlords, unlike less powerful units, have nothing to fear until your enemy’s queen starts creating Spore Colonies or producing Hydralisks. Until then, you will have the liberty to scout the area and find out as much as you can about your enemy. Once you see Hydralisks coming out from their eggs, though, you should move your Overlord to a safer distance to avoid annihilation.
Counter Attacks
If your enemy is moving fast against you, there are a few things you could do to tilt the tide of battle to your side. First, fortify your ground defenses with Zergling-Banelling combination. This could do serious damage to your enemy’s offensive forces. This also easily neutralizes any wave of Zergling or Baneling or the combination of both once it attacks your colony. You’d also do well to fast upgrade your units into Mutalisks, although keeping more Hydralisks could prove more advantageous. Rule of thumb: If you can’t afford the losses from your Mutalisks-they could be quite expensive-stick with your Hydralisks.
For your aerial defense as well as offensive aerial attacks, you can count on the mighty Mutalisks to do the work for you. Ensure that your Mutalisks are well-escorted though to avoid heavy losses at your side.
For an all-out war, Ultralisks and Nydus Worms can be your best bets, especially at the end of the game.
