Best Counters To Archon With Terran – Shokz Starcraft 2 Strategies Guide To Counter Archons
When you are playing Terran and you are going against Protoss, you need to focus more on the quality of your enemy’s units rather than the quantity. Unlike Zergs who can afford to throw hordes of low cost, low quality units at you, Protoss units do not usually come in droves. You can almost say that, if you are going against Protoss and you are playing Terran, you are in for a long game. That being said, you still need to be prepared for Protoss rushes. However, if you see Archon units in your enemy line up, you have usually spent quite a bit of time on the map, allowing your opponents time to build up his resources and tech-tree. If you are in this spot, you better be ready to repel some highly tactical Protoss attacks.
First thing’s first, if you plan to engage Archons, you need to know their strengths and weaknesses.
The most important thing you need to consider if you are looking at the Archon’s offensive capabilities is that it carries plus damage against biological units. This makes them perfect weapons against the Zerg. Against the Terrans, not so much. As long as you remember to keep a careful eye on your biological units, such as your Marines, against a Protoss onslaught with Archon units in tow, you should be good to go.
Other offensive details to remember about Archons: they are able to attack both air and ground units and their attacks do splash damage. Splash damage attacks are quite a pain when your Terran units are in a bunch so, spread out! Archons are also range attackers and a smart Protoss player would do well to place Zealot melee units in front with Archon support units at the back. Prepare for this eventuality.
Defensively, Archons have zero armor but have tough shields. They also have relatively low HP’s. Thus, if you can get through that shield quickly, you will have a dead Archon in seconds.
When attacking Archons, your best bet is to use mechanical units such as your Thors or Siege Tanks. Siege Tanks have massive HP and deal considerable damage. They are the perfect units to stand toe to toe against Archons. Thors are also tough Terran units, though not as tough as Siege Tanks. You should probably use their 250mm Strike Cannon ability. This can stun Archon units and even kill them before they can even make any impact on the field.
Attacking Archons with Thors or Siege Tanks may sound easy but dealing with an attack made up of purely Archon units are rare – unless your opponent has an I.Q. of 20 or is suicidal. If you see an Archon coming your way, you would most likely be seeing them accompanied with other Protoss units as well, most likely Zealots. You don’t want those Zealots sticking holes into your Siege Tanks and Thors while they deal with your enemy’s Archon units.
The key here is speed. You want to kill those Archon units as quickly as possible. Since Archons invest heavily on their shields, you can make mince meat out of them easily by using EMP blasts. Therefore, invest on a few Ghost units to EMP blast an Archon attack and drop their shields down to zero. Once that’s done, you can make short work of those Archon units and move on to the next Protoss attackers.
